What is Croup?
Croup is a common childhood illness that affects the respiratory system, typically caused by viral infections such as parainfluenza, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), COVID-19, or even the common cold. These infections lead to inflammation of the voice box (larynx), windpipe (trachea), and airways, which can make breathing difficult.
Croup is most easily recognised by its hallmark symptoms: a harsh, barking cough, hoarseness, and a high-pitched noise (stridor) when your child breathes in. One of the more unsettling aspects of croup is how suddenly it can appear—your child may go to bed seeming well but wake up in the night with a fever, breathing difficulties, and the distinctive cough. Symptoms often worsen at night, causing concern for parents.
While croup is most common in children under five, it can affect children of any age. Although most cases are mild and manageable, it’s crucial to be aware that croup can sometimes lead to serious breathing difficulties. If at any point you’re concerned about your child’s breathing or if symptoms seem to worsen rapidly, seek medical advice immediately or call 000 for urgent assistance.
This natural protocol offers parents safe, effective tools to soothe symptoms, support recovery, and manage croup with confidence.
